3rd place in an architectural competition
Odry, Czechia
study 2024
We are striving to restore the square in Odry to its original historical form by leveling the surfaces into a continuous, smoothly traversable area. The existing road will be complemented by a bicycle path. The gradual terrain difference in the square will be addressed using contour-like inclined surfaces, which in the ground plan create a wave pattern as a reference to the Odra River. Ultimately, the terrain difference itself is caused by the gradual slope towards the river. The waves are separated by drainage lines, where it will be possible to place inlets, allowing not only for the absorption of rainwater around the perimeter of the square and the newly planted trees, but also to drain and absorb additional water from the square. The paving in the individual waves alternates with slight changes in the shade of cut granite paving with a blasted surface. Around the statue of the Virgin Mary, and also near the newly placed bus stop, where the terrain differences are the most pronounced, we are placing several terrain steps in the direction of the waves. Parking spaces on the square are placed only in a linear direction along the longer sides of the square. They will be accessible from level one-way streets. Regarding materials, a warmer shade of granite paving has been chosen, complemented by concrete elements colored in a similar warm to slightly pinkish hue. The main goal of the design is to return the square to pedestrians as much as possible, to ensure safety, and to address adjacent roads at the same level to achieve maximum accessibility.
